Welcome to the first issue of the PsychopharmINFO Newsletter. The PsychopharmINFO.com website was started in 1999, but I didn't really begin to develop it until April 2002. The goal was to produce a useful and efficient way to find and monitor information about psychiatric medications. As a practicing psychiatrist with experience and interest in psychopharmacology research, and a desire to teach others, I've put together this newsletter to help inform patients and their family members about new information regarding psychiatric medications. Other groups should also find it useful, including physicians, therapists, pharmacists, and other health care workers; advocacy groups; pharmaceutical representatives; and anyone else with an extra sixty bucks in their pocket.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK

Atomoxetine in adults with ADHD.

[Lilly study] Large, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 10 week study of Strattera in adult ADHD. "In each study, atomoxetine was statistically superior to placebo in reducing both inattentive and hyperactive and impulsive symptoms as assessed by primary and secondary measures", which were mainly Conner's symptom rating scales. Low side effects.

Stereochemistry and drug efficacy in psychotropic meds.

Review of psychotropics which have enantiomers (mirror-image forms of the same molecule).

Acute liver failure with bupropion and carbimazole.

41 yr old man on carbimazole (a drug for hyperthyroidism) and propranolol/Inderal for 5 yrs, dies of liver failure 3 months after a 10 day course of Wellbutrin. Liver failure has been reported with carbimazole itself, and in combination with propranolol.

Buspirone reduces pain in mice

Buspar reduced pain in mice; this effect was enhanced when given with fluoxetine or with calcium channel blockers.

Low-dose Effexor causing serotonin syndrome.

A woman developed serotonin syndrome "during low-dose (37.5 mg/d) venlafaxine monotherapy, with symptoms of restlessness, tremor, shivering, diarrhea, vomiting, ataxia, tachycardia, and myoclonus."

Acute liver failure with bupropion and carbimazole. 41 yr old man on carbimazole (a drug for hyperthyroidism) and propranolol/Inderal for 5 yrs, dies of liver failure 3 months after a 10 day course of Wellbutrin. Liver failure has been reported with carbimazole itself, and in combination with propranolol. Buspirone reduces pain in mice Buspar reduced pain in mice; this effect was enhanced when given with fluoxetine or with calcium channel blockers. Low-dose Effexor causing serotonin syndrome. A woman developed serotonin syndrome "during low-dose (37.5 mg/d) venlafaxine monotherapy, with symptoms of restlessness, tremor, shivering, diarrhea, vomiting, ataxia, tachycardia, and myoclonus."
