The feedback on the newsletter has been quite positive; thank you. I have not yet got the formatting quite right for printing and scrolling the newsletter. To print it, you must indicate Landscape mode in your printer settings. To reduce scrolling left and right onscreen, go to View>TextSize and reduce your font size. I should have this fixed by next issue. Once the formatting is improved, you'll be seeing more original content. For this week, I'll discuss the statistics included at the top of each medication section, and how they can help you keep a pulse on what's happening in the psychopharm market. Thanks, Steve.

COMMENTARY:   Take a look at the table of statistics at the top of each medication section. In it I have placed four different statistics, which are worth following. PubMed Articles indicates how many articles were entered in the Medline database each week. Take Escitalopram for example. Being a new drug, there are not many articles coming out.

Google News Items indicate how many news articles are listed each week in the Google News site. If you don't know about this site, you should. It tracks 4000 news publications and websites for the past month. That means that the same articles will be in the list for 4-5 weeks, before they drop off. The PsychopharmINFO website has links to current and prior weeks' news searches. Many financial news articles are often listed because they mention a company's drug. If you see a spike in news articles, it can be interesting to see what all the hubbub is about.

Search Engine Hits lists the number of times per day that the brand name medication is searched in Wordtracker. Wordtracker accumulates this info from several different search engines, generating data on over 350 million searches. It is interesting to see which drugs are generating interest. FOr example, I find it very surprising that only five months after Lexapro's launch that it receives the highest number of search hits of all the antidepressants. It is also generating a large amount of hits on PsychopharmINFO.com. Also, the hits keep increasing each week. We'll see where it plateaus.

Finally, Google Ads are more interesting to marketing types. When you run a Google search, you see ads on the right. Each click on an ad costs the company a certain amount of money. The advertising companies tell Google the most it is willing to pay per click, and the most amount of money it is willing to pay per day. The prices in the tables indicate the cost per click if one sets a maximum of $5.00/click. It is another indication of interest level for the various medications. The big advertisers seem to be online pharmacies and lawyers' offices (look at Serzone; the high cost is due to attorneys looking for liver injury cases).

The PPI Index is a measure of the relative interest (search hits) and newsworthiness (Google News) of all the medications listed here. As the number of hits and news articles increase, the PPI index also increases. It's really just a catchy number to associate with the Newsletter, but may turn out to be interesting. We'll see.

So that's what the numbers are all about. The "Top 10" lists at the left tell you at a glance where the different drugs stand. As I later add other psychopharm drug classes, we'll see a greater mix of medication types here. Let me know how useful you find these statistics.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK

Strattera results
A number of studies came out this week, focussing on efficacy and safety results for atomoxetine, the new selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) which is indicated for ADHD. Lilly's marketing is emphasizing the fact that it is a nonstimulant, hoping that the stigma against amphetamine-like drugs will boost it's marketshare. So far, the results do look encouraging. We should expect that many psychopharmacologists will be using it as a possibly safer augmentation strategy than the other SNRI, desipramine/Norpramin. Another article reviews ADHD treatments, including Wellbutrin SR.
Genes affect response to SSRIs
This is worth noting. People with a particular genetic variation in their serotonin reuptake molecule have an enhanced response to the SSRI citalopram than those who lack this variation. This may partly explain why some do better than others with a given medication.
Neonatal SSRI exposure may reduce adult depression
This is an intriguing article. Of course it is in rats, but it suggests that exposure to SSRIs during brain development may reduce "depressive behavior" when the rats grow up. The "forced swim test" is where you place an animal in a pool of water where it can't escape, so it just treads water. The less it treads water, the more of depressive response there is.
Brain imaging of antidepressant response
There are only seven patients, but the results show changes in blood flow to the thalamus and other areas which correlate with response to venlafaxine. Look at the website in the Recent News Items section for a link to a movie of these changes.
